MEDIA STATEMENT
 DEPARTMENT OF WELFARE
 26 NOVEMBER 1999

SUBJECT : THE DEPARTMENT OF WELFARE WELCOMES THE SENTENCING OF PATRICK SIMPIWE NGQINA.

The Eastern Cape Welfare Department welcomes the 22-year jail term imposed on Simphiwe Ngqina for the cold blooded murder of our official
the late Mabhoyz Ntsikelelo Zixesha at Ngcingwana village in Idutywa in June this year.

We take comfort to the outcome of the case because we strongly feel that it has been dealt with speedily and over and above that, justice
has finally been done.

However, it is hoped that the justice system will as well leave no stone unturned in its investigations thereby unmasking the conspirators
to this matter so that the due process of law takes it course.

In the same vein, we take our caps off to the members of the public who helped the police to track down these killers. Their actions are
indeed encouraging in the spirit of constructive partnerships with government.

To the investigating team, this is a job well-done and a giant step in the realisation of the National Crime Prevention Strategy.

Lastly, we call on all our people individually and through their structures to close ranks and help the Department in particular and the
Provincial government in general to fighting fraud and corruption and other irregularities in our social security database.

This statement is attributable to the Eastern Cape Department of Welfare alone.
